The MA National WWII Memorial Committee was
established by its Chairman Emeritus Congressman John
Joseph Moakley, of South Boston on Maritime Day 1998 at
Anthony’s Pier 4 Restaurant to “promote patriotism in
our communities.”
Congressman Joe Moakley appointed Capt. Ed Sullivan,
a tugboat captain in Boston Harbor as the registered MA
Field Representative to oversee Massachusetts “doing our
part” to build the National WWII Memorial in Washington,
D.C.
Bob O’Neil from the North Shore Veterans volunteered
as the MA Committee’s treasurer, and IRS agent Bob
Pontrbriant of Plymouth volunteered as the financial
auditor.
Sgt. Charlie MacGillivary, Capt. George Street, Capt.
Everett Pope, Capt. Tom Hudner, and Capt. Tom Kelley,
all recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor
served on the executive committee.
On Maritime Day, Marcia Olinto, of the Boston
Propeller Club oversaw the first contribution from
Massachusetts to help build the Memorial in Washington
donated by Tommy Butler, a Massport official and South
Boston activist. All Massachusetts residents
are honorary volunteer members of the MA National WWII
Memorial Committee.
On Veteran’s Day 2000 the MA National WWII Memorial
Committee brought the State of Massachusetts together in
interfaith prayer at the Old North Church to honor those
who sacrificed, and led by MA veterans and the
Massachusetts State Police Bagpiper unit to a banquet in
celebration of the victory of WWII at Joe Tecce’s
Restaurant in the North End of Boston
The MA National WWII Memorial Committee is a gender
diverse group of volunteers that honors men & women
who have made significant contributions to improve our
American way of life.
The MA National WWII Memorial Committee, purveyors of
American history recognize the contributions of a great
American woman who has fallen through the cracks of
history, the “Mother of American Oceanography,” Miss
Ellen Browning Scripps, whose vision to endow the study
of the sea 100 years ago provides the science knowledge
today as to the health of our oceans.
Congressman Moakley declared that the work of the MA
committee will never be complete to pass our fiduciary
duty onto our children and grandchildren:
- to “promote patriotism” in our communities;
- to show our appreciation for the Atlantic,
Pacific, & Gulf waters that provided an ocean
buffer to preserve freedom in WWII.
- to honor those who have gone before us whose
sacrifice has helped to preserve our American way of
life.
The Massachusetts National WWII Memorial Committee is
the last remaining active Massachusetts Committee formed
by our beloved Chairman Emeritus Congressman John Joseph
Moakley, former Chairman of the House Rules Committee.
